CERT Skills Sustainment Training

Being prepared ….a CERT way of life

Start off the New Year with a Commitment to yourself and your family by raising both your CERT skill level and your confidence in being prepared to respond when needed.

In the last two years, more than 300 CERT students attended Skills Sustainment classes. What are Skills Sustainment classes? They are the answer to concerns CERT members have voiced time and time again: “I don’t really remember much about how to make a splint. I’ve never done it.” “How tight should a compress be to stop bleeding without harming the patient?” “Could I really help a burn victim if I had to?” “I still can’t find someone’s pulse.” “How far back can I tilt a victim’s head to clear an airway?” “I’m not really confident to use the tools I have.”

While our initial CERT training was excellent, if you don’t use it, you lose it. In a Skills Sustainment class, you go through a brief review of a CERT Manual Unit. You then break out into small groups and actually do hands-on practicing of the items just reviewed in the class. And hands-on practicing is overseen by your instructor, so you practice correctly! You will also be expected to have read over the Unit being taught and wear all your CERT gear. When you leave the classroom, your CERT skills have been reinforced by real hands-on practice and your confidence level ratcheted up a few more notches.

For your convenience, Skills Sustainment classes are usually held on either Saturdays or Sundays in the middle of Cobb County at the Central Library, just a few blocks away from Marietta Square (plenty of parking, excellent class room).
